Fashola Okays LASU Reopening, Approves N51m for the Institution

The Govenor of Lagos State, Babatunde Fashola, has approved the immediate reopening of the Lagos State University (LASU) for normal academic activities.

Tiwa Savage Arrested By The Police.

Mavin Records artiste, Tiwa Savage, has been arrested by the police for allegedly humiliating a policeman who apprehended her for violating some provisions of the Lagos State Road Traffic Law.

Savage, often referred to as Mavin First Lady, was said to have argued with the policeman, who flagged her down for flouting traffic rules in front of Eko Hotels and Suites Victoria Island, on Saturday.

ASUP:13 Reasons Why Lecturers Refuse To Resume

The lecturers in Nigeria’s public polytechnics have been on a nationwide strike since October 4. Despite meetings held between the lecturers and the federal government, the lingering issues still remain with the lecturers vowing to continue their strike until their demands are met.

At the root of the strike is an agreement ASUP had with the federal government in 2001. The 2001 Federal Government of Nigeria/Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic, ASUP, agreement was reviewed in 2009 with an agreement that it should be re-negotiated after three years.

The failure of government to call for a re-negotiation in 2012 as agreed upon and the accumulated challenges confronting the polytechnics necessitated the union to identify critical areas of need in the schools, the ASUP National Publicity Secretary, Clement Chirman told journalists.

The critical areas were presented as a list of 13 demands by ASUP to the federal government in 2012. These, according to the academic union’s spokesperson, include:

2024 Olympics: South Africa To Host?

South Africa is to bid for the 2024 Olympics and also wants to host the Commonwealth Games two years before that, the country's sports minister Fikile Mbabula said.

"The biggest fish to catch is the 2024 Olympics," the Business Day newspaper on Tuesday quoted Mbabula as saying.

"Sport plays a role in terms of infrastructure development," he told reporters, adding South Africa's president Jacob Zuma had already indicated the country was ready to host the Games.

It is a major shift in policy for South Africa who last year said the cost to host an Olympics would be too high. Cape Town lost out in the bid for the 2004 Olympics in the first attempt by an African city to host the Games.

NYSC to extend service year to 18 Months

The National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, may extend the duration of National Youth Service from Twelve months to Eighteen months should the Scheme decide to act on the recommendation of the Niger State Governor, Governor Babangida Aliyu, forwarded to the Director General of the NYSC, Brigadier General Johnson Olawunmi, in Minna on Monday, NaijaSharpNews corresspondents have reported.

Governor Babangida Aliyu had, while receiving the Director General who paid him a courtesy call at the Government House Minna, requested that the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) year be extented from the current 12 months to 18 months so as to sustain the values in the scheme.

According to him, “there is need for the service year to be extended from 12 months to 18 months to give more room for the corps members to be exposed to more training so that Nigerians can appreciate the NYSC scheme instead of criticising it.”

ASUU May Embark On Another Strike

Another strike by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is imminent as there is fear over the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding reached with the federal government.

Indications emerged as the national treasurer of ASUU, Dr Tunde Aremu, while speaking at a luncheon held in honour of media for their roles in the last strike in Ibadan yesterday, disclosed that government was yet to release the N220 billion for 2014-2018 programmes.

He warned that the gates of the universities might again be shut should government refuse to implement the MoU reached at the tail-end of the last strike.

Aremu explained that the money was to be released on quarterly basis and deposited at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). However, he expressed fears that

A new battlefield lifesaver in the form of a syringe can heal a gunshot wound in just seconds.

Supporters hope the ‘XStat’ will replace guaze, which army medics have used to treat life threatening war injuries for centuries.

The device was designed by US company RevMedx, which claims the apparatus can stop a wound from bleeding in just 15 seconds.

The XStat is a modified syringe that injects tiny tablet-sized sponges into a wound. RevMedx says the device was inspired by the design of a standard emergency tire repair kit.

Its creators initially experimented by spraying foam into wounds, John Steinbaugh, a US Army Special Operations medic who is on the design team at RevMedx, told Popular Science.

“That’s what we pictured as the perfect solution: something you could spray in, it would expand, and bleeding stops. But we found that blood pressure is so high, blood would wash the foam right out,” he said.

How Bishop Sold Company’s Land – EFCC

A Lagos High Court, Igbosere, on Wednesday heard how a self-acclaimed archbishop, John Okeke, allegedly forged documents and sold a land worth N54 million belonging to a firm, Immortal Impex Limited.

Okeke, who is facing trial before Justice Aishat Opesanwo, according to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), forged the letterhead of the company to facilitate the deal.

The prosecution witness, Nurudeen Bello, said the commission had waded into the matter following a petition by a director of the firm, Moses Okafor.

Bello said EFCC’s investigations revealed that Okeke was the author of an allegedly forged letter requesting the Federal Housing Authority (FHA) to change the ownership of Plot H1, Festac Town, Lagos to the Motorcycle Spare Parts Dealers Association. Bello further said that the defendant in the cause of questioning, claimed he had an understanding with the complainant to write the letter.

He told the court that Okeke had claimed he had a verbal agreement with Okafor to use the name of Immortal Impex Limited to get the land allocation from the FHA.

“An official of the Federal Housing Authority was invited by the EFCC and he presented a land allocation letter; request for change of ownership and a deed of assignment.

ASUP UPDATE: Nigerian Polytechnic Lecturers Vow To Continue Strike

The ongoing nationwide strike by polytechnic lecturers is set to continue as the National Executive Council, NEC, of the lecturers’ union, ASUP, rejected the federal government’s offer.

The National Publicity Secretary of ASUP, Clement Shirman, told Premium Times that after a three-hour meeting on Wednesday, the NEC of ASUP resolved that until all 13 issues contained in its demand are met, the strike would continue.

The lecturers have been on strike since October 1, 2013, demanding among others better working conditions, infrastructure improvement, and an end to discrimination of polytechnic graduates.

You have been applauded as one of the best dressed in Nollywood, how does it feel?

Of course, it would make me feel happy and good.  I just do my thing and people took an interest in it and say I dress well.  One thing for me is, I love to be very stylish. I feel you have to look the same way you want to be addressed either in a negative or positive way.  You just have to dress your age because as you get older, there are certain dresses that you must not wear but one thing people don’t know is that, you have to age gracefully and in that way, you become comfortable in whatever you find yourself wear. I just love fashion and everybody around me knows that and I also love taking pictures.  Some people think it is vain but that is what makes me happy and makes me feel good.  I think I have gotten to a certain age that I must do whatever makes me look good.

What dictates what you wear?
It depends on my mood and the occasion.  At times I might just want to do the T-shirt and jeans just to look casual.
